“There’s a specific look I recognize in eczema patients who’ve been managing on their own too long. They’ve stopped believing it can get better. Fern shortens that window of suffering. It gets people into real treatment before hopelessness sets in.”

FAQ

The questions parents ask most.

Fern currently treats children ages 2 and up, with a parent or legal guardian completing the intake and consenting to treatment. We do not currently treat infants under 2, if your child is younger, please consult your pediatrician.

Every case is reviewed by a US-licensed clinician with experience in dermatology and pediatric skin conditions. If your child's case requires in-person evaluation or specialist care beyond our scope, we'll tell you, and you won't be charged.

Yes. Our pediatric formulary uses age-appropriate medications and dosing. We prescribe tacrolimus 0.03% (FDA-approved for ages 2–15, not the higher-potency adult formulation), low-to-mid-potency topical steroids only, and weight-appropriate antihistamine dosing. We do not prescribe high-potency steroids for children.

Tacrolimus 0.03% ointment (brand name: Protopic) has been FDA-approved for mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis in children ages 2–15 since 2000. It is a non-steroidal option, making it particularly useful for sensitive areas like the face and neck where steroid use needs to be limited.

Topical steroids are used very cautiously on children's faces. Low-potency options like hydrocortisone 2.5% or desonide may be appropriate for short durations; tacrolimus is often preferred for facial eczema in children. Your clinician will specify what goes where.

There's no live visit. You complete a written intake form on your child's behalf (skin history, photos, current routine) and a clinician reviews it asynchronously. You provide consent as the parent or legal guardian.

Fern treats atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children ages 2 and older. We do not treat psoriasis, fungal infections, suspected skin cancer, or conditions outside the eczema spectrum. If your child's skin condition appears to be something else, we'll direct you appropriately.

No. Fern is cash-pay: no insurance, no prior authorizations, no denials. Many parents use HSA or FSA funds. Check with your plan administrator to confirm eligibility.

Message the care team through your Fern account and we respond promptly. If your child is experiencing a medical emergency (difficulty breathing, severe swelling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction) call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
